Itinerary for Jim Clark Classic Rally Special Stages
All stages are optional and although timed are not competitive.
Day 1
| Time Slot | Location | Description |
|---|---|---|
| 13:00 13:45 |
Macks Mill Shakedown SS 8ml north of Kelso |
A short stage (3mile) used in the morning by the International and other competitors to familiarise themselves with their car and the roads. The road is has fast flowing parts as well as a series of small jumps. The route from finish back to the start is 3 miles so it should be possible to do more than one run. |
| 19:00 19:45 |
SS Bothwell The start is near the Whiteadder Reservoir on the B6355 and is approached from the NW |
Running ahead of the International Rally over SS1 (7.8mile) The route starts on a wide B class road and follows the Whiteadder River with flowing corners and tricky crests. After one mile the course turns onto the narrow black tar roads up and down the Bothwell Valley. A technical drive which includes the ‘Crichness Hill Climb’ a test won by Jim Clark. |
| 19:30 20:15 |
SS Duns Super Special Stage in the centre of Duns |
The Classic Rally will be the first cars to take the start of this 1.5 mile stage around the town with crowds, pipe band and other razzmatazz. |
Day 2
Though not impossible I think a visit to the first three stages of the day would involve an unreasonably early start for the Classic Rally competitors as well as the marshals and residents. I advise:
| Time Slot | Location | Description |
|---|---|---|
| 09:30 10:00 |
SS Eccles The start of this stage is 6mile to the east of Kelso off the A698 near Birgham |
A 12mile stage known for its long straights punctuated by acute bends and junctions. The surface is smooth with many ‘old black tar’ roads which are treacherous when wet. Includes the popular section through the middle of Eccles village. |
| 10:00 10:45 |
SS Leitholm Running to the East of the previous SS the start is off the A697 near Leitholm village. |
At 13 mile this is the longest stage of the rally. At times an awesomely fast stage with the a real opportunity to drive flat out on what one motoring journalist called ‘Lemans straights’. The stage is also noted for its big jumps, one of which, Swinton crossroads, (run in the opposite direction) was recently listed in the top ten of motorsports’ driving challenges. |
| Duns | A visit to the show in Duns with prestige parking and offering the opportunity for a visit to the nearby Jim Clark Trophy Room | |
| 15:30 16:00 |
SS Edrom Starts near Preston village on the A6112 |
This 10.5mile test starts with the ability to drive up n A class road crossing the double white lines with impunity. Containing the impossible hairpin at Buxley there is a real mix of wide open roads and narrow lanes. The stage finishes a mile from Jim Clark’s family farm and the return route offers the chance to pass by his monument and grave which are both in Chirnside. This time running behind the ‘competitive rally’ most likely dodging the stricken cars and holes in hedges. |
| 16:00 16:30 |
SS Duns Super Special Stage in the centre of Duns |
Starting ahead of the Jim Clark Historic Rally a return and farewell to the1.5 mile stage around the town. |
| Gala Dinner in the evening. TBA |
